First grade is an exciting and
challenging year. Students continue to
develop reading, writing, math, science
and social skills. They learn to
understand the importance of classroom
and learning skills such as: listening
and following directions, working
independently, and working
cooperatively. In first grade, there is
also an emphasis on the importance of
being a responsible individual.
Academics:
This is our second year using the
Reading Street series, and Envision
Math. Both Reading Street and Envision
Math offer some wonderful visual, audio
and online components.
Homework Folder:
Each student has a homework folder that
will (usually) come home nightly.
Papers that are to be completed for
homework will be marked as homework
assignments. Most of the time, the work
requires a parent to work with the child
for guidance. Please set aside a little
one-to-one time with your child to go
over homework.
Specials:
Monday-French, Tuesday-Library,
Wednesday-Gym, Thursday-Art,
Friday-Music
Snack:
Snack time is every morning at
approximately 9:45. The children are
quite hungry at this time and eager to
have snack. Please be sure to send in a
snack each day with your child.
Lunch:
If your child is planning on buying
lunch, and they have not purchased a
lunch ticket, please be sure to send in
lunch money in a marked envelope or
plastic bag.
Homework Hero:
This is a valuable tool for you to use
at home to find out about happenings or
homework assignments for our class. It
can be accessed from the Hamburg website
www.hamburgschool.com . Click on
Homework Hero, and then click on my
name.
Parent Responsibilities:
In first grade we do a lot of reading.
It is critical that your child spend at
least 15 minutes every night with a
book. At first, this could be you
reading with them. Then, they will
start to tell you the story based on the
pictures and familiar words. Very soon
they will begin to bring home books that
they can read. They will also learn
many sight words which are words that
are used in most writing and everyday
conversation. These words can be
practiced by making flashcards.
Illness:
If your child is not feeling well and
will stay home from school, please be
sure to call the school attendance
line. Also, please be considerate of
the rest of the class, we want everyone
to stay healthy.
