General Music
Grades K –
2
Activities:
Students in grades K – 2 will be learning the fundamentals of
music. Coursework will include learning
to read basic music notation, learning
solfege syllables, singing alone and in
groups, and playing alone and in groups
a varied assortment of percussion
instruments. Students will also work
basic dance and movement activities and
begin to learn about music history.
Class will meet once a week during their
regularly scheduled time.
Come prepared to every class with:
a good attitude and an open mind!
Grading Scale:
Students will be graded on their class
participation and class assignments
based on the Hamburg School Grading
Scale, which can be found in the School
Handbook.
Grades 3 –
4
Activities:
Students in grades 3 – 4 will further develop their music
reading and theory skills and will learn
to play the recorder. All students will
participate in the “Recorder Karate”
program during class and should practice
their recorders at home. Learning to
play the recorder will teach students
music notation, theory, history, and
basic ensemble and performance skills.
Class will meet once a week during their
regularly scheduled time, and students
are encouraged to practice at home!
Come prepared to every class with: recorder, folder, a good attitude, and an open mind.
Failure to do so will result in points
deducted from a weekly participation
grade.
Homework:
PRACTICE! Students may also be asked to complete assignments
which could not be completed in class,
and study for written and performance
assessments.
Grading Scale:
Students will receive a weekly
participation grade and will be graded
equally on their class assignments,
homework, and written and playing
assessments. Written and playing
assessments will be graded progressively
based on each student’s progress. Final
grades will be based on the Hamburg
School Grading Scale, which can be found
in the School Handbook.
Grade 5
Activities:
Students in grades 5 will further
develop their skills in music history,
music theory, music appreciation, and
music performance. Students in grade 5
will begin study on the guitar, and also
participate in singing together as well
as exploring different types of musical
instruments. Class will meet once a
week during their regularly scheduled
time.
Come prepared to every class with: folder, a good attitude, and an open mind. Failure to do so
will result in points deducted from a
weekly participation grade.
Homework:
Students may be asked to complete

6 - 8
Activities:
Students in grades 6 – 8 will further
develop their skills in music history,
music theory, music appreciation, and
music performance. Students will
continue their study of guitar and voice
and further explore different types of
musical instruments. Classes will focus
on various careers in music and what
they entail, as well as the various
genres of music, their history,
similarities, and differences. Class
will meet once a week for one marking
period during their regularly scheduled
time.
Come prepared to every class with: folder, a good attitude, and an open mind. Failure to do so
will result in points deducted from a
weekly participation grade.
Homework:
Students may be asked to complete
assignments which could not be completed
in class, and study for written and
performance assessments.

Instrumental Music - Beginner Band
Activities:
Any student who is learning to play an instrument for the
first time will start in beginner band.
Students will be invited to join
starting in grade 4. Students will
further extend their studies from
general music class and expand their
knowledge while learning to play a
musical instrument of their choosing.
Lessons with like instruments will be
scheduled on a rotating basis once a
week while the full band will rehearse
on Wednesday afternoons during activity
period.
Come prepared to every lesson and
rehearsal with: instrument, folder and music, a pencil, reeds, valve
oil, etc., a good attitude, and an open
mind. Consistent failure to do so may
result in expulsion from the program.
Homework:
All students will be required to
practice. 100 minutes per week is
expected. Practice is an essential part
of learning a musical instrument!
Concerts:
All Beginner Band students are required
to participate in both the Winter and
Spring Concerts.
Advanced Band
Activities:
Students will be promoted to advanced band in 5th
grade or at the teacher’s discretion
upon satisfactory completion of the
Beginner Band Program. Students will
further extend their studies from
general music class and expand their
knowledge while learning to play a
musical instrument of their choosing.
Lessons with like instruments will be
scheduled on a rotating basis once a
week while the full band will rehearse
on Tuesday and Friday afternoons during
activity period.
Come prepared to every lesson and
rehearsal with: instrument, folder and music, a pencil, reeds, valve
oil, etc., a good attitude, and an open
mind. Consistent failure to do so may
result in expulsion from the program.
Homework:
All students will be required to
practice. 100 minutes per week is

Vocal
Music -
Chorus
Activities:
Students in grades 4 – 8 will be invited to participate in
the chorus. Students will further
extend their studies from general music
class and expand their knowledge while
learning proper singing technique.
Chorus will meet on Monday and Thursday
afternoons during activity period.
Come prepared to every rehearsal with: folder and music, a pencil, a good attitude, and an open
mind. Consistent failure to do so may
result in expulsion from the program.
