Mrs. Cullen
First Grade
·
First Grade is a challenging year.
Children start to become more
independent, friendships take on new
forms and the work gets more
challenging. In first grade we really
focus on responsibility.
·
Academics:
We are introducing a new reading series,
Reading Street, and a new math series,
Envision Math this year. Both Reading
Street and Envision Math offer some
wonderful visual, audio and online
components.
·
Homework Folder:
Please be aware that your student has a
“homework” folder that will (usually)
come home nightly. Papers that are to
be completed for homework will be marked
as homework assignments. Most of the
time the work requires a parent to work
with your child to figure out problems.
Please set aside a little one-to-one
time with your child to go over
homework.
·
Specials:
Monday – Music, Tuesday – Art, Wednesday
– Gym, Thursday – French, Friday – Media
·
Lunch:
If your child is planning on buying
lunch and they have not purchased a
lunch ticket, please be sure to send in
their lunch money in a marked envelope
or plastic bag.
·
Homework Hero:
This is a valuable tool for you to use
at home to find out about happenings or
homework assignments for our class. It
can be accessed from the Hamburg website
www.hamburgschool.com. Click
on Homework Hero, and then click on my
name.
·
Parent Responsibilities:
In first grade we do a lot of reading.
It is critical that your child spend at
least 15 minutes every night with a
book. At first this could be you
reading to them. Then they will start
to “tell” you the story based on the
pictures and recognize some words. Very
soon they will begin to bring home books
that they can read. They will also
learn many sight words; words that are
used in most writing and everyday
conversation. These words can be
practiced by making flashcards.
·
Illness:
If your child is not feeling well,
please be sure to call the school
attendance line. Also, please be
considerate of the rest of the class, we
want everyone to stay healthy.
